My inspiration usually derives from an abundance of archaeological finds and parchmarks left by settlements long since forgotton. Using the traditional method of papermaking, the images, embedded in hand-made paper and muslin, encapulate the ancient artifacts they portray whilst remaining contemporarary in spirit.

Birds and beasts inspired from Ango-Saxon crosses and the elaborately carved Franks Casket are engraved and screen printed on hand-made papers. Fibres from such medieval crops as emmer and spelt, and hemp and bagasse fibres from Massachusetts and Mexico are all revealed in my work.

Inspiration comes from such places as the landscape surrounding the stone circle on Birkrigg Common, near my studio in Bardsea. I enjoy the contrast between the apparent abstract nature of the landscape and the recent undulations and marks from more recent generations.

Reflecting the transient nature of such a past, I aim to creat an elusive, fragile quality in my work reminiscent of fragments of decaying textiles.

I undertake workshops and residencies for people of all ages in printmaking, papermaking and banner making. I work in nurseries, schools and colleges as well as doing workshops in museums and galleries often connected to a current exhibition.
