My work is concerned with patterns and
rhythms in both the natural and man-made environment. That is, pattern
not as a surface decoration but as an essential element of human experience
- a rhythm in objects, shapes and forms repeated but not identical.
I build self-similar units into an image that becomes more than the
sum of its parts.
I have experimented with the making of paper combined with other materials
over many years. While studying in Japan I discovered further possibilities
of using paper and, in recent years, began weaving and stitching with
paper.
I prepare the papers for the weaving in various ways. Some are hand
made, some are painted or stained with inks. Others are printed using
silkscreen or relief printing techniques. I also recycle paper that
has initially been used for other purposes. The paper is torn or cut
and woven or stitched with threads, mostly made of cotton or linen.
Often the paper is folded to create a three-dimensional image.
Thework relate to patterns seen in such things as rock formations, seascapes
and the patterns with which humans enforce an order on the world around
them, also the patterns revealed in objects seen through a microscope.
We all carry patterns and rhythms in our memories which are important
to our lives, and I want my work to be evocative of these memory rhythms
and of the building blocks of nature.
