My paper pieces are about colour and
texture, and it is these qualities that attract me to paper as a means
of expression. I am constantly delighted and inspired by the versatility
of this medium and the many possibilities inherent in it. My work ranges
from rough Currently I am working on a series of large brightly coloured flowers, the forms looming together in joyful symmetry relieved by the colour changes between the different images. Pictured is 'Red Flowers', made of poured recycled paper pulp. Another current theme is the sea and shore, inspired by beachcombing. In these sea pieces playful representations of fish and shrimps jump out of the backgrounds of surf, spray and sand, combined with bright fishing nets and blue swirling water, rippled by my unique technique that gives an undulating surface to the paper. All my work has an ecological aspect to it in the materials used and this is also mirrored in the subjects such as kites and the wind. I also work as a bookbinder and make fine quality watercolour sketch books with handmade paper on the covers. I make paper lampshades with coloured feather and leaf patterns. My paper is made from recycled waste
paper, sorted into colours, soaked and pulped. This is spread on to
cloth by pouring or with a screen, and then hung up to dry. I teach
papermaking and run workshops in schools, museums and for community
groups. In May I open my house during Brighton Festival and show my
own work and other artists' as part of the Fiveways Artists Group. My
work is in many collections in this county and abroad. |
