My work is made using tissue paper that has first been painted with watercolour or dye then further embellished with free machine embroidery and layered using a papier mâché technique to produce hangings, framed pieces, books and vessels. Other work uses handmade paper made from recycled materials. The technique evolved in an effort to interpret the frescoes in Romanesque churches and reflect the colour in the natural pigments used, the peeling paint, the faded imagery and effects of height and beams of light in the interior of the buildings. After a visit to Monet’s house and garden, a new series of work looked at the landscape beyond the garden, the ‘Borrowed View’ and more recently continues that idea and explores light on the landscape, the horizon and the relationship between land and sky, especially at dawn and dusk. I am a Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, teach in adult education and can offer workshops and demonstrations.
